Speed of Sound Project

Process

Materials:

• Symbols
• Roll Tape Measure
• Cell Phone x2
• Video Camera
• Tri-Pod
• Binoculars
• Stop Watch

Procedure:

1. Measure out 700 ft. of land (preferably flat)

2. Set tri-pod at one end with camera

3. One person stands at opposite side with symbols

4. Hit symbols together while the other person at the other end watches with binoculars

5. Start stop watch when seeing symbols hit

6. Repeat two more times and record data

7. Repeat steps 4-6 using cell phone to see how much time is delayed

8. Compare and contrast results

Precautions:

• Repeating trials 3 times to find average for accuracy
• Distance is far enough so the delay of speed is noticeable
